Assisted Living Facility in JAX and Sarasota

So I am trying to keep everyone in the loop on things, as I thought that was the purpose of this blog.
According to Tina, Granny will not be released from the hospital. I don't know all the details except that she is suffering from short-term memory loss and she can't keep up with her nutrition and medication needs.

I believe a facility has been located that she can go to that is assisted living, not a dreaded nursing home. I am under the understanding that Mom is going there on Sunday to look at the facility.

www.emeritus.com has information about the program. The facility in Jacsksonville is called Village Oaks at Southpoint 6895 Belfort Oaks Place. 904-296-2384. They have one in Orange Park too called Village Oaks at Orange Park, 1248 Kingsley Avenue, 904-264-0207. There are 4 of there facilities here in Sarasota. I have a few ladies at work that have family in two of their facilities and they say they are GREAT!

Anyway, that's the info.
I know everyone is not getting along right now. I hate that. I love you all.

Facility http://www.tenbroeckjax.com/

This is the facility that Granny is in. You can call her after 24 hours to see how she is. It's my understanding she will be there for atleast 3 days for an assessment.

I know some of us may not be able to understand that this is the best thing for Granny. For the next 3 days we know she is safe and is being cared for. And hopefully alot of our questions will be answered. It's times like this that we all must pull together as a family.

love to everyone!

FYI I had a call from mama demanding to get her car back so she can take herself where ever she wants to go. I told her she couldn't have it per doctors orders. She said she was going to kill herself. She hung up. Tina and Dale met me out there. She wasn't in the house, her hearing aids were left there along with her pocketbook. Tina and Dale knew she hadn't been on the road to Baldwin and I hadn't seen her coming from the opposite direction. We decided to look for her at the cemetery. She was there, but on the other side of the fence with a young boy walking towards the end where daddy's grave is. We went over there and the boy had already started walking back towards the woods. Tina caught up with him to find out what was going on while Dale and I walked mama around to the front of the cemetery. She was about to have a heat stroke. She was shaky, red faced and winded. She had gotten lost in the woods and ended up down Boyd Rd. at their house. She told them she was going to the cemetery so the young boy was showing her the way to get there. We got her home, she took a cold shower, Tina fed her and called Mama's doctor (PCP). He said to take her to the ER so she could be Baker Acted, if she didn't agree to it then call the police and have them Baker Act her. He said he couldn't do it without seeing her. We decided that we want her to be seen by the Neurologist she has an appointment with if possible. So, she came home with me. We knew she couldn't be left alone. I went by CVS to fill her prescriptions on the way here. She is 11 days too early for them to be filled. I asked her what happened to them and she was totally confused. As I went through and explained that she has taken 9 valiums more than she was suppose to and whatever amount too many of the others, she came up with an answer. She said the rest of them are put away at home. I asked her where at home and why would she do that. She couldn't tell me anything that made sense. Obviously, she has taken more meds than she was suppose to. I will take her to her PCP the 1st thing in the morning. This is just an update so everyone will know what is going on now. I don't know what will happen tomorrow but as soon as we know something I will let you all know. There is one other little problem. She said Jessica was in Ga. getting money from her in laws so she can buy a trailer and put it out there on mama's property. I called and left Jessica a message but haven't yet heard back. It's our understanding that Nassau County will not allow this. So please let us know if this is accurate information. I would hate for Jessica to be counting on something that mama has said to her. We all know that mama is not thinking logically and can't be responsible for any promises or agreements she might make on her own accord right now. Please let me know if there is anyone who disagrees with or didn't understand that mama is in this condition. Feel free to call here if you want to talk to mama. My number is 879-9621

friday 5/18

Tina asked me to email everyone and let you know what is going on. On Friday 5/18, Tina and I took mama to eat at Cracker Barrel, went to Winn Dixie, and took her home. She had called big Vance earlier and told him that she knew where the key was for her medicine and she told him the correct location. We gave her the pill bottles and told her we wouldn't bother with locking them up. We told her to call them in when the prescriptions ran out and let some of us know when they needed to be picked up.

She had called a locksmith on Thursday. He called me on my cell phone while I was at work. He said she was trying to get keys made. He asked her what happened to her keys and she told him her daughter had taken them from her. He asked for my number and she gave it to him. I explained what was going on and that we have a dr.'s letter taped in the window. She doesn't remember it and said someone else gave him the number. If he had gone to her house he would have charged her for a call.

We took her car (she was agreeable about this) so that we can see about getting it tuned up and get some estimates on getting the dented hood repaired. The rear bumper is also loose. Don't know what happened there or when it happened.
She has an appointment on May 29th at 7:15 AM @ Shands for an MRI. It will take about 45 minutes. I am taking her. That is the only appointment scheduled at this time.

Mom,
Has begged me and Jessica also, she told me she would rather die than go to a home. She has also asked me to move in and take care of her. It hurts me so bad to talk to her because I don't have the answers that she is looking for.

Appointment Update from Gail

Mama saw Dr. Urban on May 11th. He gave her a preliminary exam. He spent a good deal of time checking reflexes and balance to check for any kind of brain illness (tumor/stroke) or head trauma. He pretty much ruled that out. He asked her questions to check her memory. His conclusion is that her memory loss is more than what is typical of someone her age. He told her it is being caused by something other than just her age. He has referred her to a specialist (Dr. Glen) who is a Neurologist at Shands. (He said she's in the towers across from the hospital) She will do a more in depth test and make a comparison with other people of the same age. He also referred her for blood work (we did that while in the same building), an MRI and an EEG. They will call with appointment dates and times. He said do not allow mama to drive. He gave us some information on that and I took it as a subtle warning to mama. He said typically under these circumstances the doctor orders the patient to go to the DMV for a road test in order to keep their license. But since I assured him she is not driving now, he said we will wait until all of her tests have been completed and we have results to determine whether she can continue driving.

The battery in one of her hearing aids died before we went in to see the doctor. He repeated questions when she didn't hear him. She may claim that was a problem, but it wasn't. I can tell you more about the tests if you want to call. I just don't want to type it all out. It's just difficult to explain in writing. Her meds are bagged up to last until Tuesday AM. She has 2 prescriptions that I called in. They don't run out until (1 on Tues and 1 on Wed. ) The ins. won't fill them until she is completely out. So someone will need to pick them up either Tues evening or Wed. AM and take them to her. Who ever does this may want to call to make sure both are ready.

The Info We need

What day did you go.
How was mothers mood.
Does mother appear to be taking her medication.
Does mother need any Rxs filled.
Does mother need groceries.
Any other issues.

Proposed Tracking

I think going to Drs. route if we have to would be best. Thanks for the information. Her Dr. seems very concerned about mother and I don't think he would have a problem assisting us, if it comes to that.

Devena and I spoke yesterday and we thought it would be a good idea to wait and see if mother goes to
the appt on 5/11 at the Neuro Science Institute before we attempted to do a "Baker Act."

So, lets give mom a chance for May the 11, (Gail you may want to let her know the consequenses of not going) and if she doesn't go then we can speak with her Doctor regarding his assistance with a Baker Act.

In the meantime, in order to facilitate taking care of mother and improve our communications (this in turn will hopefully give us some peace of mind), I propose that we use the email system to nofity everyone of the following:
who has last seen mom,
what was done
what she may need in the future.

For instance, I know Jessica saw mother on Wednesday (the day she refused to go to the dr.)

Has anyone been since then? If so, please advise by email as soon as you read this. We need to make plans for mom for this weekend.

(as far as I know Jessica was the last to see mother, on Wednesday.
I propose that we each fill out the following information after each visit as a way to keep others informed:

What day did you go.
How was mothers mood.
Does mother appear to be taking her medication.
Does mother need any Rxs filled.
Does mother need groceries.
Any other issues.

I know this adds another task to what is already a lot of work and we all have busy lives, however, I really feel that if we check our emails daily, and then make appropriate plans for mom, we will all be the better for it.

By the way Naomi, if you ( or anyone else ) could put up a dynamic calander on your/a website that we could all access and update with the information that would probably be the best solution.

Thanks to all

Theresa, please forward to Jessica and Rebecca. Others, please forward to anyone you think needs to be on the list that I did not include as I do not have email address for everyone.

Thanks
